Surfing San Diego

I was really looking forward to surfing San Diego County. The surf was small and gloomy near me and I was ready for some nice weather and waves. After spending the night in Old Town, we arrived in Oceanside for a one-week stay.

With two little ones, we knew we needed a studio instead of a small hotel room. We chose Oceanside because the rates were so much better than in San Diego. Since I’d never stayed in a vacation rental before, I was a little nervous booking it. I’m used to calling up a hotel and giving a credit card number, so mailing a deposit to an individual seemed a little strange. The whole process was so informal.

The condo at North Coast Village was a great choice. It was in a gated complex on the beach with a nearly full ocean view. I could see the waves all the way down to the Oceanside pier. The pool, beach, and other amenities made the stay easy and kept the family happy. There were waves every day. This was my kind of family vacation. We walked the boardwalk at sunset with the stroller, as well as the Marina with all the restaurants. We also did the longer walk to the end of the pier and ate at the cute 50's diner at the end of it.

lookin north to Oceanside Pier, San Diego County Being right on the water, I was able to go out fairly early every morning with my rented epoxy “Big Guy” fish (I’m not a big guy, but it was the best board I could find in a hurry). I could get back at a reasonable time to help my wife with the kids and spend time with the family. Since I got out early, the water was pretty glassy with head-high waves most days. The red tide that had swamped San Diego for weeks was gone, and the water looked nice and blue. It was September, so the water and air were fairly warm. It was a good month for surfing San Diego.

San Diego surf map Legoland was just a few miles away and the perfect day-trip for our little ones. We went there a couple times that trip as well once to SeaWorld, a half hour away. My kids preferred Legoland.

Since then, we went once more after Memorial Day. The rates were way cheaper (about half), and everything from restaurants to the waves themselves were uncrowded. Surfing San Diego was great. The whole thing was so convenient. I’d definitely recommend this place as a great family surf vacation, especially off-season.
