Surfing Mavericks

Hey there,
I just wanted to shoot this to you and see if I would get a response. I am coming to San Francisco Friday and I am going to drive over to Mavericks to check it out in hopes of seeing some amazing surf. I wanted to ask you about where you would reccomend a visitor to go. I wouldn't be towing in or anything crazy but I would love to get some nice sizeable surf that wouldn't kill me though. Unfortunately I would need to rent a board. Do the surf shops out there rent boards? I have been surfing for about 5 years and am a bit more than a casual surfer but I have to admit I have not done my research on the area other than Mavs.
Any info would be awesome!

based on your self-description, you are obviously not ready for mavericks. even the smallest day out there would kill you. people that have surfed for the majority of their lives in northern California and are familiar with the nature of surfing here have not even attempted to surf mavericks, much less a low-level intermediate from warm, flat florida. stay alive and stay dry...
