Surfing Gear

You don't need a lot of surfing gear, but you need some basics. Considering the time I spend driving, looking for, and paddling for waves, I like to have pretty good stuff. Click a link below for my advice on picking equipment. For more surf gear tips and sales click here.

Surfboards – Obviously your first must-have item. Longboards, funboards, shortboards, fish, guns (for you crazy Mavericks people), there’s no good or bad type. The kind of board you ride depends on many things, such as wave conditions and your size, stance, experience, and physical fitness. Newer materials such as epoxy are making boards ligher and stronger.

Wetsuits – Optional in many areas but required where I’m from. With water temps around 52 degrees, I simply couldn’t surf without one. Thank goodness for the plastics industry and neoprene in particlular. These wetsuits are better than ever. The right wetsuit depends on its fit, the water temperature, and your budget. More money buys you more flexibility. I've had mostly Oneill and Ripcurl wetsuits.

Accessories – More important parts of your collection. The leash is a small but crucial piece of gear. It’ll keep you from spending your valuable time racing to the beach to retrieve your board. Equally criticial is surf wax. For about a buck (or three in Costa Rica!), you get this miracle goo that’ll help keep you upright on your board. Throw in some sun block, and you have all you need. Some other useful items are racks, boardbags, repair kits, and helmets.

Surfing Clothes - Aside from looking cool, some surfing clothes are actually practical. Sunglasses or goggles to keep the uv out, tide watches, and slip on boots to name a few.
