I use to have back pain, probably from the fact that I am in my 30's and life is catching up with me. I love to surf and have adapted a workout routine which targets my lower back. I use both free weights and a machine. I pace myself to avoid burnout, but devote enough time to keep my back strong. Since I started the weight routine over a year ago, I have improved both my surfing style, and endurance.
