"Does the brand of surf wax you use really matter?
"
Leashes are essential surf accessories. I try to hang on to my board but don’t always succeed.
The leash is mandatory except in the smallest surf. I always get one longer than my board by a foot or so. And I always make sure to have an extra on hand as a backup. The backup is typically thin for small days when I’m not worried about the leash snapping during my session. I don’t concern myself with brands here. Once I break a leash, I just see what’s in stock and buy the right length and thickness. They usually cost $15-$30.
This is the most inexpensive surf accessory. So many choices. I usually get Mrs. Palmers for cold water, but does it really matter? You can review the long threads about the advantages and disadvantages of certain board wax brands, or just save yourself some time and grab a piece for a buck. Jesus! Please don’t be like me and leave that sand encrusted lump of wax warming all day and cooling all night in you car. It just doesn’t work as well, and it only costs a buck, cheapskate!
Your Honda Civic is going to need some racks for your longboard. I had a $60 bolt-on version for my Jeep that worked great, and a travel style for the occasional trip. You could also just switch to shorter boards and buy a minivan.
They just make your boards look cooler and get them out of the way so your wife/girlfriend/temporary other doesn’t gripe about them cluttering the garage. I bought a triple-stack for about $65.
I always had FCS fins and they work great. My latest board has Lokbox fins and I like the forward/backword adjustment on them. I’ve only had to adjust them once because I found the sweet spot and left them alone.
I have one repair kit and one quick repair item at all times. I use the quick repair item, like Suncure or Quick Stick, for on-the-spot repairs and the repair kit for more time-consuming fixes, like a big ding.
I don’t use them on my fishy boards, but they’re good for high performance thrusters.
I only use mine occasionally. They’re particularly good for protecting your board when ramming your vehicle full of camping gear.
Now that you have some basic gear, check out some tips on picking the right surfboard and wetsuit.
