I'm in my 50's now, and I'm tightening up also. I swim Masters to stay in shape, and I stretch before workouts and surfing. Yoga is good, but any consistent routine to warm up and stretch your muscles is essential. Cardio-vascular excercise is also important, and then strength training. IMHO: Surfing is the best workout for surfing, then swimming, flat-water SUP, rowing, and then weights.

I had been lifting heavy weights for years like many other gym rats only to find myself stiff with little flexibility. Nearing 60 you don't need to prove that you are strong, besides you aren't anyway, well not in the same ways. Today I use a WII program for fitness by Jenny McCarthy. This program is like a personal coach with many difficult sessions that flame my arms and shoulders along with some great yoga and balance that is vital to surfing. Overall it's been a real eye opener and a rewarding workout. I would also advise anyone to do at least 20 pop ups on the living room floor daily.
