Stinson Beach

Stinson Beach is about a 30 minute drive North of San Francisco. You take 101N until you see the Highway 1 exit toward Stinson Beach/Mill Valley. The twisty, cliffy, drive will take you to this 3.5 mile sandy beach.

The surf here is all sandbars and pretty fickle. It likes a southwest swell the best and generally high tide is preferred. You need clean conditions. It is not quite as exposed as say, Ocean Beach, but definitely not very protected. I have only surfed it a few times myself. It really isn't somewhere you would drive far out of your way just for surfing. There are dangers, of course, and whitey the shark attacked a surfer here in 2002. He survived with 100 stitches.

It is however, a nice beach to take the family to, and a nice place to grab a bite to eat. There is a large grassy park area with grills next to the beach. This beach is great for a picnic, and maybe visit nearby Muir Woods, and what the heck....pack the surfboard. If all else fails, you can grab your bodyboard and ride the many closeouts available to you.

If it's a warm summer weekend the traffic and parking can be tough, so go early to beat the masses. This is one of the few beaches in Northern California that has lifeguard stations. Sometimes there even lifeguards in them...but don't count on it. They are suppose to staff them From May through September. The beach here has convenient parking, bathrooms, and shower points, all of which contribute to it's popularity.

Stinson Beach real estate is very expensive...like the whole county. As of 3/08 I was seeing lots for around $600,000-$650,000, and even the smallest houses seem to be priced at over a million. As such, if you plan on renting a Stinson Beach home, they won't come cheap. I would recommend September after Labor Day when the kids go back to school. The rates will be cheaper, it will be less crowded (at least during the week), and the surf is better...glassy Indian summer conditions hopefully.

If the surf really sucks and you're still itching for a few waves....well, you could drive a little ways North towards Bolinas. Just remember to look for the left turn since there never seems to be any sign up.

I was a freshman in college going to school a hundred miles inland in Northern California when I met some surfers from the Bay Area. We all bailed on school ...
