San Onofre
San Onofre State Beach is primarily a longboard spot. Access is from Basilone Road. It consists of three main breaks:
- The Point - In front of then northern parking lot. Breaks closer in than Old Man's and the waves are steeper and smaller. Mostly rights and medium tide is best.
- Old Man's - A multi-tiered reefbreak a quarter mile south of The Point with small rocks on the shoreline. Mushy waves so it's longboard central. This one works with lower tides.
- Dogpatch - Just south of Old Man's. Great beginners spot, slow and small. Best on medium tide.
They all work best on a southwest swell. This is a crowded family beach. If you want to escape the crowds there are miles of beachbreak to the south that work with small southwest swells on low tide. Shortboarders usually go north to Trestles.
This beach probably the most popular surfing spot in California in the 1930's. Before that surfers flocked to Corona del Mar. A jetty extension diminished the waves there and surfers switched to "San O". After World War II, the Marines took over the spot but surfing access was granted to the San Onofre Surfing Club. In 1973 it was handed over to the California State Parks System.
There's a nuclear power plant nearby that no doubt pisses many people off but hey, the thing friggin powers 1.5 MILLION homes.
