Review - Total Surfing Fitness

by SurfingCal
(Pacifica, CA)

A few weeks ago I obtained a copy of Total Surfing Fitness and have had the opportunity to put it into practice. I was feeling like I was in a rut with my workout and I wanted to shake things up a bit. This course definitely did the trick.

There are very specific workouts here, so you aren't left guessing which exercises to mix and match. There are several routines depending on your overall fitness, I found the level 1 workout to be a good place to start, but there are several more to progress to over time. The instructions are clear with full color photos to explain each exercise. The only equipment required is a set of dumbells, an exercise (stability) ball, and a pull-up bar.

It's a great workout without leaving you totally burnt out. The focus here is on “functional training”. That is, exercise that targets several muscle groups at the same time, the way we surf, instead of isolating a muscle group as many machines/bodybuilders do. Just the style I was looking for. Many other routines I have tried left me feeling way to stiff to actually surf well, so the end result of that work and sweat was counterproductive.

There are specific instructions for cardio workouts (these subsitute for surfing when you can't do that) as well as the strength workouts. The benefits showed up where I wanted it most....my surfing.

My paddle improved significantly. Not just the endurace, for the those heavy current days at Ocean Beach, but also the power of my stroke. I also felt a dramatic increase in the power up my legs. Regular surfing, paddling around and waiting for sets, tends to leave the legs a bit neglected. Total Surfing Fitness gave my legs a nice boost.

The course also comes with several bonus ebooks. One includes some interesting information on nutrition, very good info on different fats and their effect on health....you may be surprised by some of the things you read here. There's also a mini ebook showing a quick powerful outdoor workout. Also included is a quick surfer fitness test measuring your balance, upper body strength, and core. To improve your weak areas there are some simple exercises to implement immediately. Just in case that is not enough, there's also an additional ebook for the “turbulence training” workout. This is another powerful routine for fitness with full color photos and clear explanations for all the exercises.

So whether your feeling a little out of shape or if you just want to improve your present physical state, Total Surfing Fitness will do the trick. The bottom line here is it will increase your wave count.

Stick with it
by: Anonymous

I bought TSF a couple of years ago, to prepare for a trip to Indo and Peru.

I stuck with it very strictly for 3 months, although i did change and simplify some things. I basically did everything i had to do with a 25kg dumbell set and a swiss ball.....and everything else was body weight.

It had amazing benefits, and helped my surfing to a huge degree. I was in ballistic shape, and surfing aside i felt as good as i've ever felt.

As far as the stiffness one guy above mentioned, if you continue it will get better fairly quickly. I took Glucosamine & chondroitin pills and found that even after training to the point of nausea i was never even tender. It gives you a big edge on surf trips too, as you don't tend to get surfed out nearly as quickly or severely.

Highly reccommended!!

P.s rotating Push-ups a possibly thr best exercise for surfers ever!

Total Surfing Fitness Videos
by: Anonymous

Total Surfing Fitness also has online videos so you can make sure you are doing the exercises correctly.

You can even watch them on your smartphone. So you can choose to print the workouts or follow the videos. Either options depending on your preference.

Great product
by: Brian

I bought the Total Surfing Fitness last year and am glad that I did. The stretching and basic exercises really helped me focus more on the enjoyment of the sport and less on the physical strain it was placing on my 40+ year old body. Good product.

training for surfing
by: Michael

Not so keen on books for training (they are hard to follow whilst exercising). On the other hand, I own both of the Surf Stronger workouts and a few yoga DVDs. Those are just so helpful to train to and have given me huge improvements in my surfing. I prefer the video guidance--just my opinion :)
