Ocean Beach SF Sun 12 Dec 2010

I did something I havent done in a long...the weekend dawn patrol. Heck, I usually don't ever surf on the weekend. Anyway, my 6 year old daughter woke me up at 5:30AM. Having had a few drinks the night before I was a little bleary eyed and asked her if she wanted to hit up McDonalds. I got an excited "Yes" and we rolled to the nearby Mickey Dees. I went ahead and got a big coffee...and egg mcmuffin meal and when we got back I told her to go back to bed with mommy.

Now I had a mission....I wasn't feeling spectacular but was anticipating small clean surf at OB so the next thing I know I'm rolling at o'dark hundred hours toward OB blasting "Master of Puppets" to knock off the cobwebs in my head.

I paddled out just after 7AM and I must say I was the only one out for as far as I could see....at least for twenty minutes or so. I had a small 2-4ft peak all to myself, clean conditions, although with still somewhat dark overcast skies. Nothing epic but fun and blissfully empty. I almost blew chunks at first but the little adrenaline bursts cleared the rest of my hangover and I surfed for a little more than an hour catching little waves with my fish. Definately quite a few people showing up by the time I left but it just goes to show that the dawn patrol is still the best way to go surfing.

Banzai Express -- Dawn Patrol
by: Banyardi

Dude! I hear you. You're lucky to live close enough to be able to do a spur of the moment dawn patrol. I live 100 miles inland and have to plan my surf trips around family indifference to my addiction. When I do negotiate a surf session, I get up at 5:30am, drive a couple of hours, get my ya-yas out, and then drive a couple of hours to get home by early afternoon. I call it my Banzai Express.
