Newport Beach

Just south of Huntington Beach, Newport beach is six miles of wsw facing coastline. Lots of distinct surfing areas within that coastline, most of it crowded. The area from Newport Pier to the Santa Ana River jetties focuses short period wnw swells with shorter wave periods. For longer period west swells more energy goes to Huntington Beach, meaning Newport will have smaller surf.

Teeming Masses of Newport Beach

Teeming Masses of Newport Beach on Sunny Day

  • Santa Ana River Jetties - Most northern Newport break. It's a rivermouth beachbreak that picks up a wide range of swell. Best with combo south and west swells. Like many spots, it can be polluted after heavy rain.
  • Newport Beach Jetties - A bunch of jetties that create sandbars next to them. The most popular are 54-56th St and 36th St. Best on wnw and south swell combo.
  • Blackies - Just north of Newport Pier. Beachbreak best on wnw swells or wind swells. Low to medium tide is best.
  • Newport Point - Just south of Newport Pier near 17th St. Steep beachbreak that frequently closes out. Best on short period sse (Hurricane) swellz. Shoot for low tide.
  • The Wedge - South end of Newport Beach, next to the west (northside) of Newport Harbor jetty. Works on south swells that bounce and magnify off the jetty. The bounce meets with the incoming wave creating a much bigger peak. The bounce also creates significant push making for a fast powerful left. This is a very popular bodyboarding and bodysurfing spot. Can be one massive shorebreak and I've almost broken my neck/back here. Use extreme caution.

Summertime traffic and parking can be a terrible. In addition, much of the area is blackballed during peak hours. Best time to surf is early dawn patrol....especially since it tends to blow out in the afternoon.
