Moss Landing

Moss Landing lies almost at the center of Monterey Bay. As such, it tends to pick up just about most swell angles and will have more size than other Monterey Bay beaches like Marina and Manresa. It is just off highway 1 and it is impossible to miss since you can see the ugly industrial smoke stacks across the street from it.

Parking consists of a dirt/gravel road that runs behind the dunes. There is a path to the beach at the beginning and end of the road. Restrooms are the portable kind so don't expect much cleanliness but at least there's something. This is a no pay state beach. The harbor across the slough has restaurants, gift shops, and places to book kayaking trips and other recreational activity. There is a KOA Express for RV camping here.

The surfing at Moss Landing demands clean conditions since it is very exposed like most of the beaches South of Santa Cruz/Capitola. It likes a high tide and there are some nice sandbars here.

Smoke Stacks of Moss Landing Personally I have looked at this place several times traveling by but it was blown out every time. Finally, while staying at the Santa Cruz/Monterey KOA, I drove with the family on a nice Sunday morning and surfed it. It was an extremely small surf day, which was the reason I went there instead of closer Manresa. The surf was not magically way bigger but it did have more size, 2-4ft, with the occasional 5ft closeout. In fact the tide was low so most waves were closing out but still about 25% of them were rideable. What made the day was the uber-clean conditions and the crystal clear water. I could see the bottom most of the time. The sand here is fairly white. A bunch of seals were playing nearby and I saw at least one dolphin riding in the middle of clear faced breaking wave. The jetty at the harbor entrance had a few surfers out and only one guy was by me further North, so crowds were not a problem. Add to that the fact that the wife and kids had a blast on the beach chasing white wash and collecting sand dollars, it made for a great morning. By 11:30AM the wind came up but we had been there a while and it was time to go.

Wannasurf has some massive thread about Moss Landing, mostly talking about pollution and locals..blah..blah..blah, whatever. If your traveling through and you happen to catch it clean it might be worth a try. If the Jetty area is crowded you can always walk North as far as you want, or at least until it's empty.

But what the hell do I know, I only surfed this place once.
