Mate...

by A.A.
(Portland OR)

Mate. I was raised on Bondi Beach, I now live in the USA. It is a shame you did not hook up with some locals. Yes, Bondi Beach can look like a lake some times, but it is not known for its waves, it is the way the bay is situated that prevents it from getting huge waves! You needed to walk around to the next bay - Tamarama or Bronte etc. You could have even drove down south an hour or two to Wollongong. I am just saying you had so many choices and opportunities you didn't take advantage of.

Your probably right. I did look at the forecast at an internet cafe and the forecast was essentially the same...flat. I also talked to some locals who said the although it was a slow time of year, this was exceptionally slow. I also didn't have a car.

I realize that your probably right, that if I searched enough I would have found something. But I also had my wife to consider and didn't want to drive endlessly looking for surf. I still think my best option at the time would have been to shoot from Surfers Paradise and go to the Great Barrier Reef.

That trip was about 7 years ago now and I have realized that the most effective way for me use my vacation is simply to take a day or even a half day off when the surf is good in my own area.

Today with three small kids I would be happy just to get through the 14 hour flight to Sydney, although I would still love to poke around and find some surf. I still work for the same airline and if it survives we'll all take a trip to Australia again....when the kids are a little bigger.
