Dangers of surfing..part 4

by Mark Bates
(Carlsbad, CA.)

My own board!

Three weeks ago I was out at South Ponto Beach. Waves were 3-5 feet, but high tide was moving in fast, and with the backwash, the waves were walling up fast, and in shallow water.

I don't quite remember what happened, but I caught a wave that sucked me over the top, and the next thing I know, I'm popping out of the water, almost unconcious, my ear is bleeding, and the nose of my board is broken.

Turns out my board hit me so hard, it cut my ear AND perforated my eardrum. Not sure if my head broke the board, but it was swollen for about a week....

Ouch!
by: Chris

That sucks...I wiped out at OBSF and did the same thing to my eardrum, immediately followed by a massive ear infection. Was out of the water for about a month and had to go to the doctor for antibiotics as well as a specialist to remove a scab on my eardrum that caused almost total deafness in the year. Ear healed up fine but it's a reminder to use ear plugs and hood.

Instant Vertigo
by: Banyardi

Yep. I had someone wipe out @ Da Lane right in front of me and I got wapped up-side the head enough to perforate my ear-drum. 52 degree water in the inner ear... Instant vertigo! I climbed my leash, took 4 more on the head, and then got the hell outa the water. Couldn't surf for more than a month. Bummer Dude!
