dangers of surfing.. part 3

by mark bates
(carlsbad ca)

Sting rays!!

I do the shuffle each time I enter the surf. So, after paddling out and catching a few waves, I notice that I need some wax on my board.

I jump off my board to put the wax on. The water is up to my neck and my feet hit the bottom. Actually my left foot hits a ray and he hits back.

I would rather have a root canal without novacaine than to face the pain that came from this sting.

The only thing you can do, once you get home, is to soak the sting in water that is as hot as you can stand.

Now, after almost three weeks, I can walk without a limp.

Moral of the story? Wear booties. This was the only day that I did not wear them and look what happened.

Been There, Felt That, Ouchhh!
by: Banyardi

When I was 11, I was a paperboy. We had a contest that if you got a certain number of new starts you would go on a field trip to a lagoon park in Long Beach Harbor. I stepped on a sting-ray the first hour I was there. The barb stuck for awhile and then fell out. I couldn't go home for 8 hours because of the busload of paperboys. Once I did get home, I was in shock, my Mom was a Nurse, and so she took me straight to the emergency room. They soaked my foot in hot Epsom salt baths to try to counteract and draw out the poison, but it was in my foot for a long time before treatment. It would be two weeks before I was fully recovered.
