Corki Fielder

by Corki
(San Jose, CA USofA)

I began surfing at South Mission in San Diego in 1957. I met Dale Velzy in 1959 and purchased one of his fine boards. It was a 10'3" and my very first new board. I surfed Most of Pacific and LaJolla till I joined the service in 1964. I had the opportunity to surf off the coast of DaNang Vietnam in 1967, while serving in the 20th SOS as a helicopter gunner on UH-1s.

I have enjoyed the oneness with the Pacific Ocean as a surfer for over 50 years. I am now taking up as a new sport surf-kayaking at the age of 65. Surfing is the only life for me. Will continue to keep the STOKE for years to come, just like Doc did.

They are all Corki's waves
by: Anonymous

Corki,
You and so many others took my place in the jungle. I'm indebted to all of you. Just as you were in the thick of it, I was entering my Junior year in a San Jose High School. Every week end for what seemed like the entire year, was spent attending yet another funeral for someone's older brother. I entered the Air Guard just as I turned 18. A dorm chief of our sister flight was a gunner just as you were. He suffered many bouts of depression while working as a training instructor in Texas. I spent my last three days away from base in Corpus Cristy right after a hurricane. It didn't matter that the town was torn up and under marshal law, the ocean was the closest thing to Santa Cruz. Now, in Oregon I surf once or twice a week, and know without a doubt how lucky we all are because of the sacrifices you and so many others made. Thank you!

What's SUP?
by: Anonymous

You might want to try Stand Up Paddle (SUP) also. SUP has become very popular with surfers and non-surfers for similar and different reasons. When there is surf, it is easier to get into a wave, sooner. When there is no surf, you can still go out and get a good workout. Many inland waterways are now being explored by SUP adfictionarios. Check it out.
