ChicagoSurfer

I live in Chicago, and hence only am able to surf for about 3 weeks every year. Still, I like to stay in shape for when I'm able to catch some waves.

I'm an avid swimmer, and find that swimming keeps me in the best overall shape for surfing. I do an average of 2000-5000 yards about 3-4 times a week.

I lift about 2-3 times a week, focusing on shoulders, upper pecks, triceps and back. I prefer lifts that hit multiple muscle categories, such as military presses or dumbbell shoulder presses.

I like to add at least 10-20 min of cardio running or cycling after my workouts, and of course stretching afterward.

Skating on my longboard holds me over until I'm able to see the ocean again!

Swim to Live, Live to Surf
by: Banyardi

I hear ya brother. I have been swimming 2-3 times a week with the Davis Aquatic Masters for the past 17 years. I grew up spoiled, at the beach in LA. I swam, surfed and life-guarded in Manhattan Beach until I was 30. Then life, careers, and family decisions left me high-and-dry 100 miles inland. I still surf a dozen times a year, but it's a long drive to the water for me. I swim for conditioning and comraderie, but no matter how hard I work, I realize just how out of shape I am every time I get in the ocean in NorCal. I do fantasize about chucking it all and moving to Costa Rica to live on the beach, but the reality is that until my boys (12 & 14) are through college and on their own, I have to make-do with the current situation.
