California Trip

Hi Mate,

I am planning on squeezing in a 5 day surf trip in mid May 2010 while over there for work. I need to end up in Santa Monica for work at the end of the 5 days. I live on the Sunshine Coast in QLD Australia, ride a 6-2 JS fish and will probably bring a 3mm unsealed Rip Curl Ultimate wetty.

I have never been to the USA and will be doing this trip solo. Can you tell me about 1) locals + crime and 2) where the best spots to start a trip and end up in Santa Monica could be?

Thanks,

Dejan

Much better Idea
by: Bryan Hurley

I can't imagine anyone from Austrailia wanting to surf freezing cold water, swimming with possible sharks for spuratic waves every 50 miles with a-hole locals at Steamers. A good day up north dosn't match our bad days down south. (PS, Santa Cruz surfers please don't visit! Hospitality should go both ways). As for theft, California is like any place, don't leave valuales in plain sight or your gear unattented for long periods while having lunch. Your towel etc. Is usually safe on the beach. We aren't a third world country yet.

I say start in San Diego, surf Point Loma, PB, Wind & Sea, Blacks, Pipes/Swami's, Tamarac or Oceanside Pier. Now to the OC, surf Trestles!, T-Street, Salt Creek, Laguna, Newport Beach 36th to 56th streets, Huntington Pier, Seal Beach Pier/warm water channel and then to LA where you can surf Palacades, Manhatten, Hermosa and Redondo. Do expect the surf u had during your SD & OC stops and end at Malabu or Ventura. SoCal has better surf, more restuarants, entertainment, bars and more women. Enjoy and you can thank me later.
