Being In The Zone

by Brandon Forest
(Davis, CA)

In the Zone

In the Zone

I just finished reading a book called "West of Jesus", by Steven Kotler. He explores the relationship between surfing and spiritualism. I liked some of what he said, and thought some of it was hooey, but I have to admit he is a good writer and intermixed his narrative with his own surfing adventures around the world. The one thing that stood out was his definition of "Being In The Zone". I'm paraphrasing him in this quote:
"Surfing is being so involved in an activity that nothing else matters. The ego falls away... each thought follows inevitably from the previous one and time ceases to exist. Your whole being is involved in the act of the moment and you are using your skills to the utmost. Self vanishes and the now swallows us whole. While we are riding a wave, for those few fleeting moments we are utterly and completely awake."

Your keen observations get to the heart of living. Turning off the chatter, the noise, the data and in your words the "hooey" is the most important job we have in the cosmos. Living in the moment, to be fully and totally aware of yourself, others and the cosmos is what being in the zone means. Most of us have a model to follow, a mentor if we simply follow their advice, no it's not a religion,it's not FOX news, no it isn't even being a liberal and it isn't a course of study, it's your dog. He or she lives in the now, in the moment, never thinking of those days gone by or the days ahead. Fully engaged in the now. With hard work and study we all can experience the Zone and breath a lot more fully of life and our place in it. Good that you posted your words, it makes us think.
