In the Zone
I just finished reading a book called "West of Jesus", by Steven Kotler. He explores the relationship between surfing and spiritualism. I liked some of what he said, and thought some of it was hooey, but I have to admit he is a good writer and intermixed his narrative with his own surfing adventures around the world. The one thing that stood out was his definition of "Being In The Zone". I'm paraphrasing him in this quote:
"Surfing is being so involved in an activity that nothing else matters. The ego falls away... each thought follows inevitably from the previous one and time ceases to exist. Your whole being is involved in the act of the moment and you are using your skills to the utmost. Self vanishes and the now swallows us whole. While we are riding a wave, for those few fleeting moments we are utterly and completely awake."
