Beginner

by Jessica
(Newport coast, CA)

Planning on going to the blackies, but where is the cheapest place to rent a board and rashguard? Also, when is the best time to go and would surfers get mad at us, because we basically know nothing except the one time in Hawaii with an instructor :)

Help for beginner

If you plan on going surfing any time soon, you're going to need more than a rash guard! The water doesn't get that warm until late June. If you plan to surf for multiple days in a row consider buying a used board, it may be cheaper. As for learning to surf, do you mean Blackies in Newport Beach? Plenty of shops there to help or Blacks in San Diego? I wouldn't consider Blacks a learning spot. If in SD try PB. Right next to Lahina Bar on the board walk is a surfboard and wetsuit rental. Consider Dana Point's Doheny State Beach as well. Signing up for a surf lesson somewhere usually can take care of it all. Good luck and enjoy!
