OCEAN BEACH SURF & SKATE AND LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS PRESENT BEATS BY THE BEACH FUNDRAISER
A FAMILY FUN FESTIVAL, RAISING FUNDS FOR THE YMCA YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (February 1, 2011): Saturday, March 5, 2011 marks the date of the first ever, Beats by the Beach Fundraiser at Ocean Beach Surf & Skate. This philanthropic festival will run from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and will help raise funds for the YMCA Youth and Family Services (YFS), a non-profit, social service and program provider whose cause is strengthening the community.
Over the past year, the YFS has touched the lives of 40,000 members of the San Diego Community. They have provided emergency shelter for 50 homeless young adults at a YMCA transitional living program and 4,321 young people have found a safe place to go after school every day. In addition, their counseling programs have provided essential support to families in times of stress.
“We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our families and our neighbors” explains Brooke Inman, YSF Site Supervisor at Correia Middle School. “Every day we work side-by-side with our neighbors throughout San Diego County to make sure that everyone, regardless of income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.”
To supplement program funding and to help assure that the continuation of social services are available for youth and families in San Diego, the YFS must raise $160,000 in 2011. In hopes to aid in these fundraising efforts, Ocean Beach Surf & Skate, Habitat, Alien Workshop, Dizm Eyewear, SUPERbrand Apparel and Typical Culture are all working together, bringing the YFS and the San Diego community their first ever, Beats by the Beach Fundraiser.
“We are very thankful for our sponsors and their help in planning this event,” says Inman. “This event will help raise funds for after-school programs at local middle schools, such as Correia, with teacher tutoring, art & music enrichment, competitive sports leagues and recreational sports, leadership activities, field trips and special events such as dances, talent shows, recognition parties and more!”
This fundraising event will be located in the parking lot adjacent to Ocean Beach Surf and Skate and will feature live musical performances by local bands including Habitat, Tommy Dubs, The New Kenetics and Rightjahs Blend, a street-course skate contest, and fresh-off-the-grill burgers donated entirely from Hodad’s. The event will also feature an art show, showcasing donated artwork from local artists, students, photographers and skateboarders that will be available for purchase in a silent auction. Additionally, there will be a raffle, featuring gifts from local businesses and event sponsors, a face painting booth, an Indo Board interactive booth with surf simulator, yoga and muay tai workshops, and a pro/am skateboarder’s meet and greet staring Austyn Gillette and Cano Cardenas with more surprise guests to come! Lastly, Young At Art Children’s Creative Center in Ocean Beach will be donating their time to organize the event’s mural that will consist of sponsored, decorated art created during the festival. After the event, the art will be organized to form the mural, framed and then displayed inside Ocean Beach Surf & Skate.
“Being able to help out San Diego’s youth is what it’s all about,” explains Rodger Caldwell, owner of Ocean Beach Surf & Skate and Ocean Experience Surf School. “At OB Surf & Skate, we strive to make San Diego a better community for its youth and we are always willing to do anything we can to help.”
