Andrew Molera
Andrew Molera (Big Sur Rivermouth) is a reef/point break at the mouth of the Big Sur river. It's a lengthy 1 mile nature trail walk to the beach from the parking lot. The south facing portion of this beach is not that big. It doesn't hold a large crowd but the hike in deters quite a few people. It needs a big west swell to wrap in or a south to southwest swell. Being south facing, the northwest winds blow offshore here. The wave is a a fun right that breaks over the rocky reef and then peels along the sandy shore further down. I have made a few of these hikes in only to find a perfect six inch wave peeling along the shore. On the other hand, I've had nice waves here all to myself.
If driftwood and trails are your thing this is your place. There are two trails to the beach. One of them might involve crossing the rocky river which can be a slippery affair. The other trail follows the Big Sur river more closely and end at the rivermouth where there is small sand and rock beach on the bank. To get to the main beach you have to wade/swim across the rivermouth. Not a big deal with a surfboard and wetsuit but obviously can be problem if you brought the family. This a state park and it has a walk-in primitive campground with 24 sites. You can drive a few miles south to the Big Sur Valley where several campground are. As far as popular surf spots go, this is one of the only ones until you get to Sand Dollar as you head south.
