A Day in Port A

by Dara
(Surfside, Texas)

My last ride of the day

My last ride of the day

Yeah, we've all heard it "Texas has no waves".....that's a load of poo. Texas has plenty of waves to go around. It's totally different from any other surfing spot(s) though. We have this nasty chocolate brown water that will occasionally turn blue, the waves only get good when there is a hurricane or a cold front (the winter gets better), and we don't surf barrels or get tubed (ok sometimes a nice wave will roll through that's good enough to curl); we get mush....which is all perfectly fine with me. I went to one of my favorite places to surf in July; Port Aransas, Texas. I was stunned by how big the waves were by Horace Caldwell Pier. I got out there at about 7am and the swells were big, clean, BARRELING, and just perfect. I was out there all day long with some local friends. As the day went on the surf started sizing down, though it didn't get totally flat until after dark. I caught my first barrel on this day. It was great.
